So I was chilling in my friends backyard and I saw this plain, ordinary brown bird fly onto the fence, looking around for bugs in the way that birds shift their heads so fast.
and then i suddenly needed to write things down
so i grabbed the pizza box and started writing
I thought it was normal
Plain
But as I kept looking the bird became more defined, more majestic
Natures million years of evolution had engineered this bird to become the adept hunter it is today
Master of it’s domain (niche)
But what was it’s niche?
Our biology highschool textbook told us about the different predators of birds and their prey
But not of it’s environmental niche
(Sure we learned of the multitude of height-based niches in the Amazon, but nothing was ever said about the urban niches)
If it’s niche is in the forest, shouldn’t it make “biological” sense to remain there?
No, we forced it out
In a blink of an eye
We pushed this bird out of it’s niche
The niche Mother Earth had honed this bird to be
The majestic predator that it is now
And yet we ruined this bird
Gone.
All in the blink of an eye
We just keep pushing these fellow organisms without care or thought
Without emotion
So greedy
So individualistic
Mother Earth never intended for one of her children to outshine the others
